Settling In

"Personal log, stardate.... stardate.... ah screw it."

"Stardate 2393.96"

"Thank you Nikki. Ai ya I'm tired. Where was I?"

"I think you were about to-"

"Rhetorical question, Nikki. Okay, lets try that again. Personal log stardate 2393.96. I'm finally getting settled in here on the Nimitz. I've even had a chance to unpack a few things, mostly just pictures of the family but its surprising how much that kind of thing warms the quarters up. The standard issue furniture and decor is just so... Sterile. Too much order, no feeling. The place needs a little bit of chaos to make it feel lived in.

I'm getting off topic though. So the state of the ships weapons was pretty much as expected and I'm still in the process of fixing that. Phasers are just about good now and I didn't even overload the power grid doing it."

"I'm so proud of you for that by the way."

"Yeah yeah. Smart mouth. Anyway I work on the torpedoes in the morning and-"

"I recommend checking the functionality of the structural integrity fields before you begin."

"I'm more worried about the fire suppression system thank you. Where was I? Ah yes, I go to work on the torpedoes tomorrow and that promises to be educational. The launch system on the Nimitz is a new model and I'm pretty eager to get a look at the inner workings. Fun all the way around.

What else? Mrrrrrr. Oh yes, I met the captain by accident. Trying not to think too much about that one but she seemed pretty decent. Definately not the type to flinch away from doing what has to be done. Which is good. Nothing gets people killed faster than a reluctance to employ force when it is clearly merited. Too many folks out there view it as weakness and given the Federations track record its hard to argue that sometimes. All the same, doesn't look like it'll be a problem here. Also met our chief diplomat who may be almost as good a shot as I am. That was another welcome surprise, since if we venture far at all it may come up once or twice.

The crewmen assigned to me are the usual mix and I'm still breaking them in but we should be set to run some drills and supplementary training soon. Most of them need a combatives refresher though their marksmanship seems solid. Got a couple fresh from the academy or from boot that are still pretty stiff, so I guess I'll have to work on that. If they can't see me as more than a superior rank, I'll never be able to lead them effectively. Men don't fight for rank. They don't fight for ideals or flags or principles. When the phasers start going off there's only one thing any man will ever fight for: the friends and family at his side. Without that... Well, it'll be okay, they'll losen up soon I'm sure. And if they don't, there's always drastic measures."

"Do I even want to know what that means."

"Probably best if you don't. End log."
